During the sporophytic self-incompatible (SSI) response in Brassicaceae pistils, the canonical receptor/ligand interaction between SRK (stigma) and SP11/SCR (pollen) is known to trigger a signal transduction cascade that results in blocking of resource delivery required for pollen germination on the papillary cells. The Samuel Lab has identified several compatibility factors (PLD1, GLO1) that are targeted for degradation by the self-incompatibility (SI) response. The lab is currently pursuing several other positive and negative regulators that could modify SI response in Brassicaceae.

The Samuel lab has also mapped out a functionally redundant MAPK cascade that is responsible for phosphorylation-dependent activation of Exo70A1 to promote compatible pollinations in Brassicaceae.
